Americans are selfish

(This is something I wrote at a mothering site I am on based on the experiences I have had with the women there.)

That’s the conclusion I have come to after reading one to many posts/answers about Obama being a socialist and we can’t have that in our country.

Socialism at it’s base is about sharing the wealth.  Everyone working as hard as they can and sharing the fruits.  I’m not a pure socialist but it does sound like a nice idea.  It’s idealistic and would never work because people at their root are selfish, greedy beings.

And I’ve discovered that Americans are the greediest, most selfish people.

Why don’t they want Universal Healthcare?  “Because I don’t want to pay for someone else’s medical care.”  Real nice.

Why don’t they want expanded welfare system or any welfare system?  “Because I don’t want to pay for other people to sit around.”  Again, real nice.

Why don’t they want to pay any taxes?  “Because I don’t want to give my hard earned money to anyone.”  Oh, so caring.

The attitude of the people against socialism (which I have found to be mostly Christian Republicans) is…kind of sickening.  It’s all about me, me, me, mine, mine, mine, I don’t want to share.  Real Christian-like of them.

I’m pretty sure Christ would be a socialist.  Give what you can, take only what you need.

I’ve already said I don’t believe socialism would work in this country (mostly because Americans are so selfish and greedy and don’t know how to take only what they need).  But it’s sad that so many people are against the basic idea of sharing the wealth, helping their neighbors.

I don’t mind paying my taxes.  It sucks they take so much.  We’re poor.  We live on the cusp of needing the services we pay into every day.  But we have free schools and our roads are finished.  If we do away with taxes how do they fund anything in this country?  So they take them away and now I have a few thousand more dollars a year to work with.  But since there are no taxes to pay for public schools I have to pay tuition at a school.

Hmmm.  In reality we already do that.  Well, my dad pays the tuition because we don’t make enough.  Would we be making enough if they didn’t take out for taxes?  Probably not.  I have 3 kids in school and their tuition is $8000 this year.  That’s for grade school.  The Catholic high school I went to has a yearly tuition now of over $8000 that’s per child and I would have 4 kids in high school at the same time (tuition was about $3500 a kid when I went there in the mid 90s).

Since we pay our taxes I have no problem dipping into social services if need be.  We haven’t done it yet but we qualify for food stamps, WIC and medicaid for the kids.  We are poor.  We almost took WIC when our youngest was born and I was blasted online for that…called lazy and should get a job or whatnot because I’m somehow living off of these selfish people who don’t want to pay their taxes.  I’m pretty sure I’d be living off of the taxes my husband puts into the system.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that I’m ashamed at how selfish and uncaring this country has become.  We’re all for helping people in other countries but when your neighbor needs a hand up after losing their job and running into hardship they cry about it and say they don’t want to help because it is their money.
