30 days of fanfic writing meme (30)

30 – Do you have a favorite fic you’ve written? What makes it your favorite? And don’t forget to give us a link!

Ow wow.  Choosing a favorite fic is like choosing a favorite between my five kids.  You just don’t do that.
Okay… I think the one that I’m most proud of is Man in the Box.  It’s in a completely different style than any of my other stories and was the first time I ever wrote in 1st person and in present tense at the same time.  That was a big deal for me and I really like how it turned out.  It was also my first Daniel-centric piece.  Before that they were all team oriented or Jack/Sam.

29 – What is your current project or projects?

Do I have to list them all?  LOL
My main ones I’m supposed to be working on are an apoca!fic for [info]sg1friendathon  and a Sam/Jack story for [info]het_bigbang .  Plus there are a bunch of little challenges for [info]fictionland.  Not that I’m getting much done for any of them.

28 – Have you ever collaborated with anyone else, whether writing together, or having an artist work on a piece about your fic?

Nope.  But [info]campylobacter was sweet enough to make some little title banners for two of my Daniel/Vala stories.  They were nice surprises.

27 – Where is your favorite place to write, and do you write by hand or on the computer?

I tend to do most of my writing in my bedroom with my fan on (white noise) and my door lock (which doesn’t necessarily keep the kids out).  Since I don’t own a laptop and the computer is in the family room on the other side of the house that means I do most of my writing by hand with a pen in a notebook.  Then I type it all up at a later date.  Seems to work for me although it creates quite a bit of paper clutter.

26 – What is the oddest (or funnest) thing you’ve had to research for a fic?

I don’t think I’ve done much research for my writing.  I’m pretty lazy so I tend to shy away from stories that would need a lot of research.  I did start (still haven’t finished) a That 70s Show fic that took place at Great America (a theme park outside of Chicago now run by Six Flags).  I wanted to make the story authentic to the 70s.  I’ve been to the park a lot but in the 90s so I researched the history of the park so I would know which rides they had back then (amazingly a lot of the same ones I rode when I was a kid 20 years later).

Other then that the only thing I remember researching were military terms and ranks for SG-1 fic (more because I’ve always been curious about them anyway but wanted to get the details right in the fic).

25 – Music – Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain “mood” to write your fic? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?

Nope.  I need it quiet usually to write.  Occasionally if I get in a groove it doesn’t matter what’s going on around me but for the most part I need it as quiet as possible.  Music is just a distraction and I end up wanting to sing along instead of concentrate on my writing.

24 – Betaing – How many betas do you like to use to make sure there aren’t any major flaws in your fic? Do you have a Beta horror story or dream story?

I actually haven’t really used a beta.  I’ve only used them (them being just [info]ufgator1977 ) on a couple of stories.  Mostly I look for them for my longer, more involved stories.  I don’t even think about it when I’m writing short fic.

23 – When you post, where do you post to? Just your journal? Just an archive? Your own personal site?

I post all over the place.  Back in the day I posted my That 70s Show stuff to an archive I found but they shut down a year after that so I moved them all over to ff.net.  I’ve had a LJ since I first started writing fanfic in 2005 but I never really posted my fic here because I didn’t like the format.  ff.net was my main archive for years.  Then last fall when I started writing SG-1 fic I started posting them all here since there’s such a welcoming community set up on livejournal.  I now also post everything at AO3 and my Sam/Jack stuff at jackandsamforever.

22 – Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you’ve thought about doing? And if not, why not?

Well, I’m supposed to be doing the het_bigbang right now but I still have zero words written, lol.  I hope to focus on it eventually.
I do NaNoWriMo every year, though.  My first was in 2005 and I finished about 22k words with a That 70s Show fanfic.  In 2006 and 2007 I barely even cracked a couple thousand words but in 2008 I won for the first time with an Angel fanfic (All the Time in the World) that I have yet to finish.  Well, I ended it and all that but there are so many holes to fill up.  In 2009 I wrote an original sci-fi story (won but didn’t finish the story).  Last year I wrote an epic SG-1 fic that I have yet to finish.  I won NaNo with 56k words but the story is only about half done.  And with NaNo coming up fast again this year I doubt I get around to finishing it.

I tend to stay to myself when doing these big challenges so I don’t have any great stories to tell.  I think my favorite experience was printing off the NaNo certificate of completion in 2008 when I won for the first time.  I happened to have a sheet of fancy paper that came with my new printer and I used that and hung it proudly on my bulletin board in my room.  I couldn’t stop beaming all day.

Last year’s certificate is pinned to the wall next to my computer.

21 – Sequels – Have you ever written a sequel to a fic you wrote, and if so, why, and if not, how do you feel about sequels?

I started one.  I wrote Homecoming in May/June 2005.  When I did NaNo that year (my first year) I decided to write a sequel to it.  It went good until I wrote myself into a corner and I never finished it.  It had good reviews but I took it down since it’s been years and I can’t seem to finish it.

Other than that I haven’t written any major sequels.  I have a couple stories I continued in a separate story.  I guess those are sequels although in my head sequels are slightly different but I don’t think I could actually articulate that difference, lol.
