Girl Genius fic: Picking Up the Pieces

Tarvek and Gil try to figure out what to do about the situation. Follows Confusion.
364 words | [PG]

“We’re just going to have to rebuild the entire thing,” Gil said, wiping his hands on his trousers after righting the table von Zinzer had hidden behind.

“That’s going to be a little difficult when we don’t even know what Agatha was working on.” Tarvek picked up a piece of broken equipment, turned it over in his hands then discarded it on the table. “This will be the most difficult puzzle in the history of the world.”

Gil retrieved two more pieces from the ground then assembled it with the one Tarvek had put down into something that looked like a heavily modified microscope. Or a blender. Who knew. The thing immediately fell apart, and Gil let out a defeated breath.

“Maybe Agatha’s memories will come back once she rests. It might not be permanent.”

“Good point. We should get her back to her room; get her something to eat and-” Tarvek spun on his heel, peering in every corner of the lab. “Uh, where is Agatha?” Read more…

Girl Genius fic: Confusion

Agatha has no idea where she is or who she is and that’s a serious problem. Follows Aftermath.
362 words | [PG]

Agatha backed away from the two strange men as they argued over whatever happened in this lab. Her lab apparently. Because she was a woman named Agatha and was a scientist of some sort and these people were her friends. Except that other man said she used him as bait. What kind of person could she be using another human as bait.? Bait for what?

The thought chilled her. If she needed a human for bait, how big was the thing she was trying to catch? She needed to get out of here before whatever it was came looking for a snack. While her “friends” continued their heated disagreement, she easily slipped out the demolished door into an empty hallway.

“Mistress,” called a voice. Read more…

Girl Genius fic: Aftermath

What did Agatha even do? And poor Moloch. Follows Unexpected Consequences.

Gil watched, stomach in a knot, as Tarvek guided Agatha to a lopsided chair and helped her sit. She twisted her hands together over and over while biting her lip. This just couldn’t be happening. It couldn’t. Every time he got close to something resembling happiness, it all fell apart. It wasn’t fair. Maybe he was cursed?

“Wulfenbach, are you listening to me?”

Gil blinked at Tarvek. “What?”

Tarvek’s eyes narrowed. “I said go check and see if anyone else is in the lab. Agatha doesn’t remember-” He trailed off, worry creasing his brow. “We need to figure out what she was working on and what happened.”

“Right. Got it.” Gil waded through the settling smoke and debris. Parts of the walls and ceiling had collapsed and most of the equipment was in pieces. He picked up a tin which instantly dissolved at his touch. Dusting his hands on his trousers, he kicked away half a chair that skittered into an overturned workbench.

Girl Genius fic: Unexpected Consequences

Tarvek and Gil go to help Agatha in her lab but something goes horribly wrong. Follows The Ring.

Tarvek stomped through the halls of Castle Heterodyne, Gil slouching along next to him, hands deep in his pockets. How dare he? How dare that layabout attempt to circumvent their mutual agreement to give Agatha time to get to know each of them equally and then make her decision? And just when Tarvek had thought their relationship somewhat settled. They were getting along amicably and even had fun at times. Then he had to go and do this.

He seethed with rage but managed to mash it deep down in the place where he kept those useless emotions as they approached Agatha’s main lab. Inside, a whistle blew, increasing in volume by the second. Gil slowed, head cocked at the door which seconds later exploded outward, nearly cutting him in half if he hadn’t the ridiculous reflexes of a cat.

“Agatha?” Tarvek called, peeking inside the smoldering room. Read more…

Girl Genius fic: A New Hobby? Maybe Not

Tarvek probably should have thought a little more carefully before suggesting Agatha take up a new hobby, especially one requiring sharp, pointy objects.

Tarvek considered the large contraption currently occupying most of Agatha’s mechanical lab. It had a squat round body about two-and-a-half meters tall sitting on six articulated legs. At least a dozen arms sprouted from various spots on the chassis, most folded in on themselves in a ready position. Tubes and wires connected the control housing that appeared to be smiling at him with its various dials and lights, and on top of that sat four meter-high spikes surrounded by some kind of collapsible scaffolding. Most peculiar, though, was the cages attached to it’s back—each containing two bemused sheep. All-in-all, Tarvek was baffled.

“But what does it do?” he asked, realizing his mistake a moment too late when Agatha squealed in delight, her voice still resonating from the Madness place.

“Let me show you,” she said, bouncing over to the machine just as her chief minion, Moloch von Zinzer innocently strolled in with a trolley of snacks and beverages. She flipped a couple switches, setting the machine into motion. Read more…

Girl Genius fic: Sacrifices Better Left Undone

The machine is finished. It works just as Agatha predicted. But not everything goes according to plan. Now Gil has to make a difficult decision. Too bad Tarvek is thinking the same thing. Written for Day three of Girl Genius Week 2018.

Gil stumbled back as their creation came to life. It chugged and whistled while it gained momentum, gears spinning and parts clanking in a growing cacophony.

“Is it supposed to do that?” Tarvek shouted over the noise, his voice shriller than usual.

“I-” Gil joined Tarvek a few feet from the machine. “I have no idea.” The contraption vibrated violently, raining dust and debris from the ceiling as the tremors grew. Gil feared it might tear itself apart and take half the castle with it. What have we even done?

Tarvek said something Gil couldn’t hear—alarm etched all over his face. Gil shook his head in confusion.

Then it all stopped. The silence was deafening. They exchanged worrying looks before Gil inched forward.

“What are you doing?” Tarvek screeched, grabbing at Gil’s arm.

“Something’s-”

The rest of his statement was lost to the boom of an explosion. The blast threw them across the room. Gil skid along the rough, stone floor, landing in a heap with Tarvek. He groaned as they untangled battered limbs. Read more…

Girl Genius fic: Quit Pretending

Set sometime after Mechanicsburg is freed as everyone settles into life at Castle Heterodyne. Agatha thinks she knows how to fix Gil and Tarvek’s relationship. She’s usually right. Written for day 1 of Girl Genius Week 2018 on tumblr.

“That’s it! I can’t take it anymore!”

Gil stumbled to a stop as Agatha swung around to face him and Tarvek. They shared uneasy glances at the slight Sparkiness in her tone. “Wha-” he started to say, but she cut him off.

“The arguing and bickering. Can’t you two do anything without fighting?”

Another exchange of looks. Gil couldn’t even remember what they were fighting about moments ago, but he knew they’d been doing it. They fought over everything and anything and nothing. He wasn’t even sure why anymore.

“We’re not-” Tarvek protested, but Agatha put a hand up to stop him.

“Enough. I don’t want to hear it. I want you to fix it.”

They looked at each other, neither wanting to ask the question. Agatha sighed dramatically. “You’re both ridiculous, you know that. This isn’t as difficult as you’re making it out to be.”

Gil was so confused. “Making what difficult?”

Agatha rolled her eyes. “Getting along. Being around each other. You try so hard to irritate each other instead of being friends. You spend all your time pretending to hate each other—always pushing the other away when it’s obviously not what you want.” Read more…

Girl Genius fic: The Distance Between Us

gg_thedistancebetweenusGil has spent the last three years of his life fighting to save his friends, and now it’s over. They won. It’s time to settle down and enjoy the victory. Except nothing is ever that easy for Gil. Just when he was finding peace, Tarvek and Agatha throw him a curve ball. And it hurts.

“I need space.”

Gil blinked at Agatha, not sure he heard her correctly. “Space? What does that mean?”

Agatha took a deep breath the way Gil’s father always did when he was coming to the end of his rope. “Gil, ever since we got back from England you’ve been-” She paused, apparently searching for the correct word. “Needy.”

“Needy?”

“I was going to say ‘clingy.’” said Tarvek, “but ‘needy’ works, too.”

“You’re so intense all of the time. Like you’re dialed up to twelve and the knob has broken off.”

Gil frowned at her. “I don’t understand.”

“It’s just a lot sometimes.”

“A lot?” Gil was aware he was repeating everything, but it was taking all his resources to process what she was saying.

Tarvek joined Agatha in front of him, linking their hands together. A united front. “It can be overwhelming,” he added. Read more…
