Summertime Fun

owen_56

Here’s the ultimate question: what do you remember most about your summers as a child?

Is it being chauffeured around town from one organized activity to the next? Did you spend an hour every day doing school packets for extra credit on the first day back? Did you get a couple hours at the park while Mom watched near-by lest anything happen?

If you’re my age, or born anytime before the mid to late 1980s, then probably not. Maybe you did do Little League or went on a scouting camp out, but you probably didn’t have a new activity to do every single day, the rest of the time spent supervised by an adult.

Melissa Fenton wrote an article, Top 10 Ways to Give Your Kid a 1970s Summer, at mommypage.com, and it’s pure genius.

She says, ” I am done with all the forced smile-inducing, uber planned and supervised, over-the-top summer life experiences I am supposed to provide for my kids.” [her emphasis]

I hear ya, Melissa. Although I was just a baby at the end of the 1970s, I strive to give my kids the kind of summers I had in the 80s/90s. Her top 10 list matches mine pretty darn close. I’ll let her explain: Read more…

The Amazing Story Generator

Just to have some fun around here (and maybe get me writing something) I’m going to post a random prompt from The Amazing Story Generator that I won at a local NaNo event last month.

This weeks prompt is:

storygen_123013

Suddenly able to hear others’ thoughts, a rookie cop breaks into prison.

Any ideas? How does the cop start to hear thoughts? What did he hear that would make him break into a prison? Is he trying to stop something or rescue someone? Why do something so risky? Who is he? Or is it a woman?

Share your thoughts or write a short story for the prompt.

Wanna play a game?

I did this game with my seven year old daughter (Nora) to help her brainstorm for her YWP project. I gave her a basic character to start with: one of her characters from her Sims game which happened to be her as a fairy. She has pink wings.

Then I asked her if the fairy was a normal person in their world or something different. She chose different. The next question was she a big fairy or a teeny, tiny fairy. She said tiny. And from there we just kind of developed the character and storyline. It’s very simple since she is seven but I loved the idea so much I wrote it down for future development.

Anyway the game would run similarly. We all start with a blank character. Just a cutout of a human shape. Or a wire frame to mold onto.

I’ll ask the first question which will have two choices. Pick one and reply to my comment. The first person to comment can ask the next question (can be anything) but keep the choices down to two or three. This is supposed to be a basic idea, not in depth development.

So any of my 8 followers want to play? Want to pass the game around to your own followers who like to write or just want to have fun?

I’ll start us out in the first comment. Remember we’re starting with a blank human for this challenge (we can do other concepts like settings or plots later).
