Camp NaNo April – Day 13

Camp-2017-Participant-Profile-PhotoCheck out these links for an explanation of what Camp NaNo is and what I’m doing.

Day 13: together

Today, we’re staying in the modern world with Bellamy and Clarke. They’re a little out of their element, but what better way to get them started than to throw them together in a situation neither wants to be in?

See, the real world can be just as complicated as the apocalypse, except without all of the bloodshed (hopefully). For Clarke that means juggling school, work, her mother’s expectations, and her personal life. Abby only wants what’s best for Clarke, but what Abby thinks is best, isn’t always what Clarke thinks is best.

That’s why Clarke has been so reluctant to go on this couple’s retreat thing with her mom and Kane. She somehow she got talked into it, and she regrets it even more when she finds out her boyfriend, Finn, has been cheating on her. Now she’s stuck explaining to her mom that her life is a mess. Not something she looks forward to. There’s also the issue of the very expensive tickets that have already been paid for.

So, Clarke decides to give them to her friend Octavia and her boyfriend, Lincoln. They could use a vacation, and if anyone would enjoy a couple’s retreat, it would be those two. And she figures the dinner party Octavia is throwing will be the perfect time to spring her plan on them.

Too bad, Octavia’s annoying older brother is in town, sticking his noise right where it doesn’t belong. She’s never really cared for Bellamy. He’s arrogant and sarcastic and pushes her buttons (yeah, I stole that line from yesterday). If he calls her, “princess,” one more time she may strangle him with her purse strap.

But, she’s determined to not let him ruin the night or her offer to Octavia and Lincoln. Her plans unfortunately unravel when Lincoln can’t take time off of work. Octavia has the perfect solution, though: she can just go with Bellamy.

The End.

Yeah, the set-up is pretty cliche, but I was in the mood to write a popular trope, and this was the first one to spring to mind when I saw the prompt. Forcing Bellamy and Clarke to spend time together when they can’t stand each other is always fun. More to come from what is shaping up to be yet another novella.

Bonus:

There’s another knock–this one louder–on the door just as he gets there.

He peers through the peephole then groans, his forehead hitting the door. Figures. He throws open the door, but doesn’t move out of the way. “Hey, Princess, what an unexpected surprise.”

Clarke blinks at him, obviously surprised. Apparently Octavia didn’t warn her either.

“What are you doing here?” she asks.

He leans against the door frame. “What are you doing here?”

She narrows her eyes. “I asked you first.”

“Yeah, but I decided not to answer.” He laughs at the scowl on her face. This is how pretty much every conversation goes with Clarke. There’s something about her that brings out his inner child.

Camp NaNo April – Day 12 recap

For an explanation of what I’m doing, check out this post and this one.

I’m skipping right to the chase today because I’m hungry and still need to cook dinner.

Day 12: discover

Today, we meet Bellamy and Clarke in a completely unfamiliar setting. It’s modern times. There are no Grounders and no pending apocalypse to worry about. Unfortunately for Clarke, there’s the annoying guy that lives across the hall. She’s pretty sure the guy hates her guts even though she’s barely talked to him.

That’s probably because Clarke does her best to avoid him. He’s arrogant and snarky and pushes every one of her buttons. He’s also a pain in the ass–blasting his radio all hours and answering the door shirtless when she goes to yell at him.

Today, Clarke is not in the mood to deal with him. She’s had the worst day possible, starting with missing her alarm and ending with walking home in the pouring rain. All she wants is a glass of wine, a hot bath, and a good book. Too bad the jerk across the hall has other plans.

Asking him to turn down his music is a recipe for disaster. He pretty much slams the door in her face then cranks it up another notch. Giving up, Clarke decides to try to make the best of her night.

Unfortunately, she seems to have lost her keys. Sopping wet, cold, and exhausted, she has nowhere else to go. There seems little choice but to knock on the door across the hall again. She can only imagine what he’s going to say this time.

The End.

Bonus:

His eyebrows shoot up when he realizes who’s at his door. “You look like a drowned rat, princess.”

Clarke represses the growl that builds every time she had to deal with him. “Could you please turn your music down?”

“Why?”

“Why? Because it’s loud. I can hear it all the way down the hall.”

“Nobody else is complaining.”

Clarke takes a deep breath, already feeling her blood pressure rise. “That’s because Mr. McDurmant works the graveyard shift and Mrs. Jaurez is deaf.”

“You know an awful lot about our neighbors.”

“Because I’m neighborly, unlike some people.”

He puts a hand over his heart. “Ouch.”

Bellamy doesn’t let him pass. “How about you go talk to your girlfriend and leave Clarke alone. She obviously doesn’t want to talk to you.”

“She apparently doesn’t want to talk to you either.”

“Which is why I’m here and she’s there and we’re not talking. See how that works?”

Bellamy suddenly clamps his arms around her with a growl.

“Quit wiggling around,” he says into her ear, voice rough.

Clarke bites down on her lip to keep from laughing. “Sorry.”

Bellamy leans his forehead against the back of her head and shakes it. “You’re killing me, princess.”

He puts his hands up in mock surrender. “Just saying you have that look about you.”

“What look?”

“Like you have a Titanic-size stick up your ass.”

Monroe nearly snorts beer out of her nose. Traitor, Clarke thinks.

A two-for today.

Finally an adult shows up. She’s kind of tall with curly brown hair and pretty eyes. Bellamy watches her from under his hand. She greets all of the kids then makes her way towards him. His heart flips. It’s been a while since he’s talked to a girl that wasn’t Octavia or the trolls he works with.

Anger boils up. Why does she have to be so ungrateful all of the time? But then she starts crying again. Big, stupid, alligator tears spilling down her cheeks, soaking the knees of her pants. Something wrenches in his chest then drops to the pit of his stomach. He kind of thinks it’s his heart.

His eyes slide closed, and he has to force himself to stay awake. They’d offered him some full time hours at the restaurant for the week. Sixteen hour days plus the commute there, between jobs, and back home were going to kill him. It left him six and a half hours to shower, sleep and eat. And spend time with Octavia. In his life, there literally weren’t enough hours in the day.

“Are you going to tell me you’re pregnant?” He’s teasing, but the thought sends a shot of panic through his system. He bites his cheek. “Please tell me you’re not pregnant.”

“It’s triplets. Bubba says we can get married at the biker hall, but I gotta shank a bitch to get in first.”

(I never thought I’d write modern au’s because I like to stick mostly to canon, but they’re kind of addictive.)
