As if my life isn’t stressful enough, my husband brought home a puppy twelve days ago. A puppy!

I am not a dog person. At all. And we already have four cats. As much as I love cats, they’re already driving me nuts wanting in and out of my room all hours of the night. Especially Bellamy since his injury–he just likes to let me know how unhappy he is that we won’t let him outside anymore.

Now we have a dog. And guess who gets to take care of her?

Assignment Feedback

Abandoned School Classroom
Last week in school I had two papers to turn in, one for each class I’m taking. I got grades back for both of them today.

The first was for my Literary Theory class. We had to use one of the theories we’re learning about to analyze the book Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko. I chose to use structuralism, specifically Tzvetan Todorov’s version. I won’t get into what that entails because it’s complicated and confusing. The point is I got my grades today with some comments on the paper. I’ve been waiting for this so I can start writing the full paper which is due June 15.

According the comments, I did a pretty good job. She mentioned some places where I needed to explain my examples better (which doesn’t surprise me because I wrote the main part of the paper then went quote hunting in the book for examples and just threw it all together at like 3am the day it was due). Her comments were somewhat helpful. I got 65/70 on it.

My other paper was for Intro to Sociology. We had to explain how our education affected us sociologically. I just kind of blathered on about what I did in elementary and high school, then went back and added in information explaining concepts from the book. I really didn’t put much effort into it. I got a perfect score on the first paper and had no idea what the heck I was doing.

So I get my grade a few minutes ago and it’s 148/155 (95%). Hmmm, I think, I must have screwed something up. I go to view the comments and this is what I find:

Good work, and thank you for sharing some of your interactions with formal education. The format of your paper was good, and your synthesis strong. I appreciate the resources that you pulled into your narrative, and the impact on your own life that you outline.

Oooookay, but why did I miss seven points? Apparently I did a good job on the paper, but I did something wrong. There’s no freaking explanation. How am I supposed to know what to improve on? ARGH! Now I have to email her for details. Emailing makes my anxiety go crazy and I get sick to my stomach.

But seriously, why not explain where the points were taken from.

These professors this term are driving me nuts. At least the Sociology one participates in the discussion board. My Lit teacher is never around so we’re all just mumbling around, acting like we know what the hell we’re talking about after reading a text that provides very few examples to explain concepts. I’m so glad this term is almost over.

EDITED TO ADD: My sociology teacher just updated our virtual classroom with an announcement about the paper. This part really got me:

I have attached here the assignment parameters that were available to you in our course information area so that you might be able to decipher where your points were lost (those that were not specifically mentionned in the feedback that I left for each of you.)

Umm… Isn’t that her job? Isn’t she supposed to tell us where we didn’t meet the requirements instead of us “deciphering” it on our own. Also note the spelling and grammar mistakes. WTF?

Misongynists Say the Darndest Things

If you’re lucky you’ve never heard of the MRA (Men’s Rights Activism) and the website A Voice for Men. The idea sounds innocent enough: advocating for the rights of fathers in divorce cases. Maybe that’s how it started… somewhere, at some time, but that’s not what MRA is about.

It’s about a bunch of misogynist dickheads patting each other on the back for their misogyny. And they say the dumbest (most infuriating) things.

Thanks to Man Boobz (a blog dedicated to mocking these nutcases) I found this nugget of an article at A Voice for Men.

The author, Clint Carpentier, rants on about how the poor, abused men are forgotten about when the women start pushing out babies. Who will think of the men!

Here’s some of his more douchey observations:

Giving birth is an amazing feat of zero skill, and it still amazes me. It amazes me that this is the epitome, the pinnacle, the supposed female trump card to all male accomplishments.

Your life is in jeopardy for a matter of hours, a few times in your life. The number is less than three if you’re an educated career woman. Of course lesser educated educated, less talented, less professionally accomplished women, tend to have far greater experience in the field of giving birth.

This is the only “job” affording prestige, praise, and credit, for just exercising a biological function. So, why is it a trump card? If I hadn’t spayed her, my dog could do it.

You see, if I am correct, and it is only fathers who suffer this abuse, then delivery of such injury is selective. I can see no call for it. In fact, fathers-to-be should avoid the maternity ward altogether, as they are obviously not welcome. If birthing is license to mistreat, abuse, or injure a father in the witness of medical professionals, then what deterrent exists, preventing continued abuse in private?

In just these four passages he really lets you know what he thinks: birth takes little skill, it’s just biology, nothing more; labor isn’t that big of a deal; stupid women have more kids; woman are barely above dogs (and possibly should be spayed); and believes that men have it harder in the delivery room than the women because of, “…have also seen the scratches and bite marks, on the fathers who braved the maternity ward.”

OMG! Scratches! Bites! He also mentions loud yelling. The horror. Can’t we think of these abused men? Their lives are in danger every time their wives give birth.

I’ve never gone through labor. I had five c-sections, though, and a miscarriage. The miscarriage was agony. The pain was almost unbearable and I didn’t have to push an 8 pound baby out of my vagina in the end. But the men!!! they might get scratched.

The really amazing part of his rant is that he mentions he got off easy because his wife had to have a c-section (which he did not attend). This guy has a wife? He procreated? I feel for this woman. She lives in a highly abusive house going by the things this guy said. His attitude towards women is that they are put on this earth to serve men, are inferior, stupid, unable to do anything without a man holding their hand, and most importantly, they are evil and trying to destroy men. God, I hope he didn’t have a daughter.

The whole time I read his article I kept thinking, “this can’t be real, no real man would say something so idiotic,” but sadly, I know these guys are out there. The number of responses agreeing with him confirms it.

They say it’s all women’s fault that the world is going to hell, what with them wanting to work and vote and be considered people. The shame.

But in reality, it’s pricks like this guy that are bringing the country down. They want to bring us back a hundred years when a woman “knew her place” and beating them wasn’t just legal, it was expected. Luckily, these stains on humanity are outnumbered by the many, many kind and respectful men out there.

I don’t normally advocate domestic violence, but in this case I hope his wife comes to her senses, kicks him right in the balls then takes him to the cleaners in the divorce. I’m sure that will give fuel to his indignation and more proof of the evilness of women. But, come on, this guy deserves it.

WTF Syfy

I am so fed up with this station.  A couple years ago I fell upon it and started watching episodes of Enterprise that I missed when it first aired.  Then I got hooked on SGA and SG-1 since they came on right after.  That is when Sci-fi (as it was back then) actually aired them as per the schedule.  I stuck around because they introduced Eureka and Warehouse 13 and now Alphas.  And I tried to ignore the idiotic paranormal ghost hunter shows and wrestling.

But this is unacceptable.

Three days ago Colin Ferguson was all freaked out because he heard a rumor on Twitter that the show was going to get canceled.  So he looked into it and Syfy execs had this to say:

Although we don’t have a commitment beyond 6 episodes for the 6th season, we’re hopeful this will not be the end of the franchise. (from @syfy on Aug 5).

Then I log on tonight to see Colin tweeted just “BOOM” and I noticed everyone responding to him were giving condolences on the loss of his job.  WTF.  So sure enough I find a link to this: http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/08/08/eureka-cancelled/

Here’s a statement from Syfy:

“After painstaking consideration, we have had to make the difficult business decision to not order a season six of Eureka. But Eureka is not over yet. There is a new holiday episode this December and 12 stellar episodes set to debut next year, marking its fifth season and six memorable years on Syfy. The 2012 episodes are some of the best we’ve seen, and will bring this great series to a satisfying end. We are very grateful to Bruce Miller and Jaime Paglia, their team of incredible writers, and an amazing cast and crew who have consistently delivered a series we continue to be very proud of. We thank the fans for their support of this show and know they will enjoy its final season in 2012.

I’m not so much mad that they’re canceling (although that pisses me off because Eureka is one of the best shows on TV right now) but because they tried to screw with the fans.  Three days ago they made it out like there would be at least a partial season 6 and they were pretty confident that they at least wanted the show to go on past that.  Well, they said hopeful but they really could have stated clearer that there wasn’t much actual hope.  You know… like said we’re considering it but we’re not really sure either way right now.  This is utter bullshit.  Not only are they canceling it but also canceling the 6 episodes they just confirmed they were making for season 6.  GRRR.

I’m so sick of Syfy and I don’t think I will watch any new shows they come out with for fear of getting vested just to have them torn away for no real reason.  Warehouse 13 will be next.  Probably followed by Haven (which I don’t even watch).  I just started watching Alphas but they’ll probably cancel that and put on some more ghost/imaginary beasts/whatever hunters.  What the hell that has to do with sci-fi I have no idea.  And there’s always wrestling (which has absolutely nothing to do with science fiction) to take up the prime viewing spot on Friday nights.  Vince McMahon can suck it along with the program directors at Syfy.  They can take their wrestling and crappy B movies and shove them up their asses.  Blah.
